Physical Activity & Well-Being for the Work Day

Roswag and colleagues (2023) aimed to discover if physical activity positively affects employee well-being when it's conducted in the morning before work as opposed to after work.

More specifically, the study aimed to discover if physical activity in the morning, before work, would increase employee engagement, while also reducing emotional exhaustion and job-related anxiety through the appraisal of the upcoming work day.

Previous research has typically conceptualized physical activity as a recovery activity after work to detach from and replenish personal resources (a consequence strategy), as opposed to an activity to shape an employee's appraisal of the upcoming workday which effects well-being (an antecedent strategy).

The results of the study revealed that engaging in physical activity in the morning before work was positively related to both engagement and challenge appraisal for the upcoming workday.

In summary, being physically active in the morning, before work, can improve an employee's well-being during their upcoming workday!
